R1 Ryders

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a big fan of the genre-bending sounds coming from R1 Ryders. I’m not the only one, badman DJ Sinden included the Funkitek mix of Rubberband in his Best of 2009 list and the new The Count and Sinden release – Strange Things – comes with an R1 Ryders funkitek remix, which has been put out for free to promote the release.

R1 Ryders are making an appearance at Wifey’s Warehouse party on the 18th of December alongside the mighty Slimzee and the godfather of funky dancehall The Heatwave at a secret Hackney location.  It’s lineups like this that made me move to London in the first place.  When I saw this poster I was almost sick with excitement.

More details are available from the facebook event, Strange Things comes out on Monday so cop that and  look out for big things from the R1 Ryders camp in 2010 – I’ve heard some whispers about upcoming releases that are gonna blow the start of the year away.

H’n'B

Recent times have seen some serious dancefloor smashers in the bass heavy house world coming from a bunch of producers that were usually more prominent on the drum & bass scene. Slowing down the tempo but using the same techniques, they’ve been able to crank out some awesome tunes that have ruled 2009.  Here’s some of my favourite examples.

DJ Zinc

DJ Zinc – Blunt Edge [2009] (buy)

DJ Zinc – Super Sharp Shooter [1995] (buy)

Redlight / Clipz

Redlight – Kid Soldier [2009] (buy)

Clipz – Download [2006] (buy)

Jack Beats

Jack Beats – Get Down [2009] (buy)

Scratch Perverts – Get Ill [2003] (buy)

Sub Focus

Sub Focus – Could This Be Real [2009]

Sub Focus – X Ray [2005] (buy)

When I Get That Feeling

Dubstep has got well sexy

Von D ft. Phephe – Show Me.

This tune is amazing. This video is amazing. I love everything about this. EVERYTHING. When it comes out I’m going to buy the hell out of it.

200F & J Kamata – You Don’t Know What Love Is.

This is one of my tunes of 2009. Its like sex in the ears.

Chromeo – Night By Night (Skream Remix)

Skream’s had a crack as well, calling this a sexstep remix.  I don’t think it’s as good as the others though.  Still, apparently it’s legitimately available for free if you do like it.

Terror Danjah – Zumpi Hunter (Swindle Remix)

Some sexy grime as well.  I love this tune as well.  Buy it.

Wiley x Chew Fu

This just came up on twitter (big up Urban Nerds), having been a big fan of Chew Fu and Wiley for ages I thought it would be worth posting.

Chew Fu used to light up the week with his remixes and bootlegs that he kindly gave away for nothing pretty much every week via Palms Out Sounds’ greatly missed Remix Sunday series.  Some of his tunes still get awesome reactions when I drop them in a set, even the downright ridiculous ones like the Doobie Bros remix.  His Eurythmics remix gets even the most dormant crowd singing their lungs out.

I don’t think this tune lives up to the sum of it’s parts.  Still, it’s nice to see two artists I admire, from completely different scenes, collaborating.  What next?  Def Leppard and Joker? R Kelly vs Glassjaw? (Yes I really do love all those artists)

[via friedmylittlebrain]

UPDATE – it seems this tune is a grower, I’m liking it a lot more today than I did yesterday.

Funkitek – Fuck Yeah

R1 Ryders are back again, this time smashing up Major Lazer’s dancehall monster Pon De Floor.

These guys seem to seriously have their finger on the pulse right now.  They’ve picked up an already remixed to death tune and still made something fresh sounding whilst retaining enough of the original to make it recognisable and a surefire dancefloor smash in a dj set.  Similarly to what they did with their funkitek remix of La Roux (see here) – they’ve crafted a monster that will cater for both sides of a crowd, those who want singalong tunes that they know and those who are sick of hearing the same tunes everywhere and want to hear something fresh.  I’m definitely playing this on Saturday at Southern Sound festival.

3180_69194448934_511818934_1590287_3765601_n

They seem to have fully mastered the art of self promotion as well, they regularly update their twitter and facebook (unlike a lot of artists) with relevant stuff, which is the whole reason why I follow them in the first place.  I found out today that their first EP – Burnout EP – just got released on iTunes (get it here).  This is a seriously good move on their part – generally if I’m looking for tunes I have to scour so many sites just to find what I’m after that most (non DJ) people would give up.  The iTunes store is the first port of call for most people, and it’s really disappointing the lack of UK underground tunes that are on there.  Rant over – go buy Burnout EP now if only for the insanely catchy Rubberband which I have been humming constantly since I got the vinyl and will probably have to get now to slam on the iPod.

Pretty much the only time I listen to the radio is for Scratcha’s grimey breakfast on Rinse.  Its basically amazing, and I’m not just saying that becuase I won those tickets to Rinse vs FWD at The End.  Scratcha talks more than most pirate DJs and thanks to that the show provides all the best bits of a commercial radio breakfast show; features, phone ins and guests but with the music I want to hear rather than some chart shit.  His personality comes across in such a way that I think if I met him I’d probably try and talk to him like a mate which is kinda weird cos I don’t know him.

He’s just put out a mix which you already should know is gonna be straight fire and you need it in your ears about now.

I don’t know what funkstep is, similarly to how I don’t know what funkitek is but I know that I like all these new sub genres coming around and I love how being in London lets me get down and check out these new sounds evolving whilst the rest of the world probably won’t even hear of it for ages.

La Roux – I’m Not Your Toy – Remixes

On my recent trip to Ibiza, the bastards in the next hotel room had the La Roux album on repeat, constantly.  That’s not true, I could have easily dealt with that, they actually just had Bulletproof and In For the Kill on repeat.  Don’t get me wrong, good tunes still, but not on repeat for a week.  And as good as the album versions are, the remixes kill them.

This was written on a drawer in the hotel

Theres something about La Roux tunes that really brings the best out of producers remixing it.  As much as I now hate Skream’s remix of In For The Kill, it was fucking massive, Foamo and Zinc both smashed Bulletproof and now there’s been plenty of activity around the new single, I’m Not Your Toy.

French electro badman DatA has rinsed the strings as well as the gallic favourite crushed up synths to produce his remix which is pretty good, but comes third in my rundown of the top three remixes I’ve heard.  Whenever I think of DatA I think of Aerius Light, a tune that was in my head for at least 18 months but for some reason I never played it.

Bassmonsters Jack Beats have consistently churned out huge remix after huge remix.  The thing is, I always get pissed off when retards on YouTube can’t tell the difference between Jack Beats and dubstep.  Maybe I’m assuming too much of YouTubetards.  Anyway, I love Jack Beats for their surging crescendos and this one is jam packed with em

Number one in my crappy little rundown are R1 Ryders, a group of West London based producers who have so far (as far as I know) only released the one tune, Rubberband, but let me tell you it’s one of my favourite 12s this year.  Listen to this and tell me what the hell it sounds like to you, cos to me it sounds like some kind of new brand of genius.

CANNOT WAIT to get my hands on a full version of that.

PEOPLE WHO ONLY PLAY TWO SONGS OFF AN ALBUM – for the love of god burn yourself a cd with loads of other songs on it you also like.  PLEASE.

Logan Sama Treats Us All

cake

So one of grime’s most prominent spokesmen, Logan Sama, celebrates his birthday today by treating the internet to a huge mix of badman fire.

As well as pushing grime to an ever increasing number of listeners through his Kiss 100 radio show (still the only 100% grime show on mainstream radio?) he’s been feeding my appetite for vinyl recently by signing up MASSIVE tunes to his Earth616 label and releasing them on REAL LIFE VINYL.  Seriously massive tunes as well, from the scene’s top boys including Maniac, Wiley, Davinche, Rude Kid and DVA.  You’d have thought he might take a day off for his birthday but I’m well glad he didn’t or we wouldn’t have this:

The Heatwave – Funky Bashment Showcase – Rinse FM

The Heatwave on Rinse FM (30 July 2009) | The Heatwave Events – dancehall reggae and bashment.

Huge radio show presented by Gabriel from The Heatwave, focussing on the increasingly apparent relevance of Bashment in UK Funky.  Who wants to go to Jamaica?
